"It's actually very simple. Live Messenger get's all it's ad information from a host called rad.msn.com (remote advertisment!?) and since it's possible to tell Windows to not lookup a host through the host file and one can quickly get rid of the ads in Messenger.

You need administrative privligaes for this and if you are running Vista and have UAC enabled you need to make sure you launch both Notepad.exe and Cmd.exe with elevation (Shift right-click them in the start-menu and choose run as administrator)..."

    For those of you not in the know, close messenger & follow path

    C/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/ETC

    Open log file with wordpad & type in under the existing text 'www.rad.msn.com' close & save changes to the document.

    Hey disco, no more ads, it's replaced by a messenger logo.

    worked for me too, Live Messenger version 2009 (Build 14)

    Add this to the 'hosts' file:

    127.0.0.1 rad.msn.com # suppress advertising banners in Live Messenger

    cd %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc
    notepad hosts

    GO TO THE END OF THE DOCUMENT AND ADD THE FOLLOWING TEXT:

    0.0.0.0 rad.msn.com

    SAVE AND CLOSE

    NEXT TYPE:

    ipconfig /flushdns

    START MESSENGER
