Mumble - Voice Chat Application for GamersMumble is a voice chat application for groups. While it can be used for any kind of activity, it is primarily intended for gaming. Mumble works with all games as a regular voice chat application.

Mumble has very low latency combined with good sound quality; it uses Speex extensively, not just the voice compression technology, but also the voice preprocessing to remove noise and improve clarity.

Mumble also has positional audio for supported games, meaning the other players' voice will come from the direction their character is in game.

Anyone who tried Mumble 0.x or 1.1.x, I wholeheartedly urge you to give 1.2.x a shot - it's progressed in leaps and bounds, and while there's still no shortage of work to be done, the quality is incredible. Many of the biggest complaints people had about Mumble in the 1.1.x days are resolved in 1.2, such as easier Administration (it's still not perfect), channel passwords (again, not perfect, but getting there) and the new overlay's awesome.

In the interests of full disclosure, I'm a Mumble host and a contributor to the project, so I may be just a tiny bit biased.

I have tried the mainstream voip chat programs such as vent, teamspeak and now I honestly feel mumble gets the win for the voice quality. Configuration and administration isn't bad. Teamspeak is horrible for the latency and voice lag, not good enough in my opinion with today's technology. Vent gives me mixed emotions, a little more customization, but overall I still prefer MUMBLE over all of them because you just can't get any better than that for real time high quality voice chat.
