"I recently wrote a simple answering machine program/plugin for pidgin and someone asked me to port it to 32 bit. So I fired up pidgin within my virtual box installation at work (as I have only a 64 bit machine at home) but couldn’t get it to connect. Tried all sorts of methods found over the net of changing ports etc, set port forwarding in Virtual Box NAT, even switched to using a bridged host interface but still no go. On a whim, installed pidgin in the host, i.e., windows and still the same issue. Hmm, interesting.. But wait, gtalk client works, then what gives..."

BigStringIM is a new web based Instant Messenger which allows you to log in to your MSN, AIM, Yahoo and Google Talk accounts via your browser.

BigStringIM is cross-platform which means it enables you to use all your IM accounts from one buddy list.

The free web application incorporates BigString’s IM platform that allows a user to send IMs which self-destruct without being copied, logged or screen-printed by the recipient.

In addition to enabling users to send IMs from one service to another, the patent-pending IM technology leaves no trail or copy of the IM on any server once the message self-destructs. The time for self-destruction is set by the sender, and can be set to disappear in as little as a few seconds to more than an hour.

The sender can also choose a number of visual effects for the self-destruction. A message will disappear in real time simultaneously from both the sending and receiving IM screens whether the message was sent to an account at AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, WLM, Google Talk or BigString.

TorChat is a P2P instant messenger with a completely decentralized design, built on top of Tor's location hidden services, giving you extremely strong anonymity while being very easy to use without the need to install or configure anything.

TorChat just runs from an USB drive on any Windows PC. (It can run on Linux and Mac too, in fact it was developed on Linux with cross platform usability in mind from the very first moment on, but the installation on other platforms than Windows is a bit more complicated at the moment).

Tor location hidden services basically means:

* Nobody will be able to find out where you are.
* If they are already observing you and sniff your internet connection they will not be able to find out
o what you send or receive (everything is end-to-end encrypted)
o to whom you are sending or receiving from
o where your contacts are located

Pidgin is one of he popular multi-protocol chat client. Splert turns Pidgin into a customized answering machine when you are away from your computer.

Splert allows you to divide up your contact list into groups based on email IDs and execute actions based on when someone from a particular group messages you while you are away. e.g. For general friends, you can keep a message like "Will talk to you later when I come back", or if someone from office IMs you, it’ll send them your phone number "Call me at XXXXXX if urgent". And if you boss is the one pinging you, you could direct the message towards your twitter account so that you get it as an SMS on your phone immediately.

Splert Features:

* Group based rule execution, each group can contain any number of email IDs
* Custom replies for each group.
* Integrates with twitter and will forward the message to your twitter account (or send a direct message to some other account) if you so desire. (Temporarily disabled since Twitter has blocked their IM bot)
* Runs as a separate process over d-bus instead of running as a pidgin plugin, so much lesser chances of crashing.
