"In November 2009, Google purchased VoIP provider Gizmo5 to enhance the Google Voice platform and challenge Skype’s supremacy in the growing Mobile VoIP segment. Launched as an “invitation only” service, Google Voice is now available to all U.S. residents and has met with an overwhelming customer response.

Many users and analysts believe that the next step forward for Google Voice is to transition from a browser-based client to a desktop client. However, unconfirmed news suggest that Google has ruled out any plans to build a desktop application for Google Voice any time soon. This move has prompted Google fans to create an online petition, asking Google to release a desktop version of the VoIP client. If the company does give in to its fans requests, it is surely bound to be an interesting tussle between Google and Skype..."
